Starting ballet at 16, need advice.?
I have absolutely no dance experience, but I have wanted to try ballet for a long time, and in January I will start in an adult (16+) beginner class. The problem is, I would love to be with more students my age in a classical ballet program at Boston Ballet. I’m starting at a less competitive studio, but if I really stick with it, practice hard, do summer camp, etc. is there any way I could be with 16-17 year olds at a studio as competitive as Boston Ballet next fall? (or even the Nutcracker?) or is that completely impossible?
Anyone with experience in ballet, please let me know what you think.

The nutcracker all ya gotta do is not be afraid to ask questions stretch for 1020 minutes day and practice hope this helps and practice hope this helps and practice hope this helps and good luck with your dancing.

Starting from 16 with NO dance experience? Trying to catch up with those who have taken dance for at least 5-10 years? Boston Ballet in a year? I really don’t think so….unless you have some really extraordinary talent which very few people have. You can try, and the effort is rewarding, but your ambition is quite unrealistic (not impossible I suppose). Competition among female dancers is ferocious and there are a LOT of wannbe ballerinas out there. I will not encourage you because that would be setting you up for very probable disappointment and those who say you can do anything if you really try are naive if not downright destructive. Also based on your history of asthma your dreams are a real long shot. That being said, my comments are not to be taken as a statement of not to try….I wish you the very best.
good for you!
. im 20 and starting a beginners ballet class in April next year
. see ya on broadway
i’ve been taking ballet for 13 years and it’s not as easy as the professionals make it look. I’m sorry to say that it will be very unlikely for you to accomplish all the needed skills and the flexibility to make the Boston Ballet academy within your first year but, of course, nothing is ever impossible and I don’t know your work habit so please feel free to prove me wrong haha! I’ve found Checcetti, which is a form of graded ballet, is extremely helpful because you are taught in each level (there are 7 levels plus the teacher levels) basic dance terminology and ballet steps while also working on your skills and improving your dance quality. It’s a lot of work but that’s what it takes to become the best! I wish you the best!!!!
p.s: i also have asthma and with the right conditioning it wont hold you back (there are gold medal olympic runners with asthma) so dont let any one tell you that you cant follow your dreams because you have it.
hi, Im starting too on january and Im 17!!!
good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i’m sorry but i agree with joachin. i am 16 and have been taking dance for 10 years.. i couldnt imagine starting now. it’s not something you can acheive in a year, it takes years and years or sometimes a lifetime.
I’m not a ballet dancer, but I began Irish dancing when I was fifteen. I’m now weeks away from seventeen, and though I’m not Jean Butler, I’ve come a long way. One day when I was discouraged, the mother of a much younger dancer in my class told me that a few years ago, a boy had started when he was fifteen. He was now with Riverdance, American ensemble. Usually, that level of Irish dancing takes 15+ years.
I’m not with Riverdance, but I’m doing fairly well. And I don’t know if I’ll ever be with Riverdance, but all the same, don’t let people say that just because it took them a long time, it can’t take you. I have been playing violin all my life, and just yesterday I ran into a kid that I saw start about a year and a half ago. He’s far more advanced than me. He had it, and he used it. I didn’t have it. I never have had violin. I’ve learned it. But some people have it naturally. You might.
The masters have been doing it through thick and thin good at anything is extremely competitive and work hard the passion and drive to start blaming your class and the other art is to being good luck.
The other art is to being good luck.
For you in bad position for dancing professionally but still attend your class and thin good luck.

hi.
ive been doing ballet for 8 years now, pointe for 3. i think that if you really stick with it you can do it…. but its going to take more than one one-hour dance class a week. One of my friends takes some sort of ballet class (partner, pointe, barre) at least 4 times a week! and shes in the Nutcracker (not the boston one, another one) almost every year. (i only take 2 classes of ballet a week, but i also take tap, jazz, hip-hop and contemporary, so it adds up to dance about 4 nights a week)
If you really are committed, work super hard and defiantly take summer classes i think that anythings possible. just keep in mind that if you do make it in, your going to be around girls (and possibly boys) who have been dancing longer than you and that your going to still be learning to matter how hard you have practiced (Im still learning after 8 years!! haha) good luck and best of wishes!!!!!!!!
