Beethoven music for waltz? Which songs?

waltz

I tried to understand what, if any, portions of Beethoven can be used to dance the waltz. I know next to nothing about what I do just as background music for a fact, I am directing, and the single CD, I am sure that I am somewhat in the Beethoven. Each of the songs that can be used to waltz? Thanks!

the waltz did not exist as a dance at Betthoven’s time. It appeared on the scene about 30 years later, and at first ( this will sound familiar!) was considered a really raunchy way of dancing. I mean, you were ..touching.. ieeuw.
So, Beethoven didn’t write any waltz music. If you find anything in 3/4 time that doesn’t go too far off into the rhythmical experiment department ( and that’s partly what he’s famous for), you could use it for waltzing to, but it won’t be the same smooth glide that you’ll get as from Johann Strauss, Jr.

The only composition by Beethoven that reminds a bit of a lilting, sort of waltz-like rhythm is the Moonlight Sonata’s 2nd movement, that has the waltz-like time signature. Beethoven did not really compose anything particularly waltz-like at all, all his other works are lot more “massive” and “symphonic” rather than waltz-like.

While Beethoven did not write any waltzes, some pieces of his (such like the first movement of his 3rd Symphony (”Eroica”), which is in a fast 3/4 time) can be waltzed to.

His Diabelli Variations is also mostly in 3/4 time (as the theme he wrote the variations on is often called a waltz), but you may have a hard time dancing to it.

If you’re looking for waltzes for a play, you might want to consider purchasing a different CD!
