How are ballroom dancing shoes different from regular high heels?

Are there any real distinction between "official dancing in the ballroom," shoes and high heeled sandal dress standard? I know they are different, but I 'm wondering what makes them so special that the people go to stores to buy dance shoes ballroom dance. My interest was piqued by my own high-heeled sandals sorry-looking. I 'm going to a dance in April (for the first time – and really dance!) And my shoes are pretty weak. I 'm wonder if they fall so short of dance shoes that I' ll need to buy a new pair.
