Churches of Christ do not allow instrumental music in their worship services.

Since a wedding is not a “worship service”, most will allow instruments to be used in weddings within their building, but some will not allow any instruments in their building at any time.

The thought usually is that many guests at weddings may have no prior knowledge of the church and if they come in the building and see instruments, they may get the impression that they are there all of the time and used in worship.

Many that do not allow instruments during a wedding will allow recordings of instrumental music to be used, however, some will not even allow that. Again, you would have to check with the local congregation.

I got married at a Church of Christ. At my wedding, there was a string trio that we hired from the city’s symphony orchestra. Later, however, we moved to another area and the church we attended would not allow any instruments in the building at any time, not even recorded. All music had to be vocal.

The reason there is this variation is that congregations of the church are autonomous, governed by the local congregation. There is no regional, national, or world-wide “headquarters” that oversees the local congregations.

Each congregation goes directly to the Bible to see what should be taught and practiced as a matter of faith or doctrine. Christ is the only head of the church. (Eph. 1:22-23)

On matters of opinion, convenience, prefrences, judgement or desires, each congregation is free to decide for themselves. These, however, must never contradict Biblical teaching.

They normally aren’t allowed to drink or dance. However, they are allowed to make up for it in weddings. Consequently, the location for the reception should be located where the guests have access to overnight accommodations.

Churches of Christ have frowned on alcohol consumption. The Lord’s Supper is served with unfermented grape juice, and It would still be hard to find many members who would openly consume alcohol. Dancing, except by marriage partners, has also been discouraged, but in sexually degraded North America opposition to dancing has become ridiculous to many members. Dancing would probably not be sponsored at a Church of Christ wedding reception, however, out of respect for old fogeys.
